COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The student is able to clearly communicate essential clinical information and to interact with patients and healthcare professionals.
LEARNING SKILLS
The student develops autonomous learning skills useful for continuous updating in hematology

Prerequisites

Knowledges and skills furnished by the course of Human Physiology and Pathology

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching with discussion and self -assessment tests at the end of each lesson. Compulsory course attendance is required. Only the students with at least 75% of attendance are eligible to take the final exam.

In particular, the frontal lessons will be organized into thematic modules:
- introduction to blood diseases and approaches to the hematological patient (transfusions of blood products)
- management of the most interesting haematological pathologies
- use of clinical cases to support with interactive discussion.

Assessment methods

Evaluation of student proficiency is based on written or oral test (viva voce). The written test consists of multiple questions meant to evaluate the student’s ability to understand and the basic knowledge of hematology theory. The first part of the written exam regards the general hematology, the student has 40 min to answer. This is followed by specialistic hematology in which the student has 60 minutes in total to answer. Questions cover the basic aspects of hematology as well as the main aspects of hematologic patient approach. The questions will be as specific to evaluate the basic knowledge of the topic. This means that the student must know the key steps of diagnosis, the most relevant approach to hematological malignancies. In order to pass the written part of the exam the student must obtain a score of 18/30. The oral exam covers all the aspects of the theory of hematology. The student should be able to discuss on the topic and be able to connect and analyze the different subjects.
Moreover, the student must have a deep knowledge of the most common hematological malignancies - being able to connect risk factors with diseases. In order to test the acquisition of this ability the student will be asked to solve simple clinical oriented problem, e.g recognize suspect of tumors based on clinical manifestation, etc. The final grade is expressed in 30/30 were 18 represents the minimum and 30 the maximum.
